As
a little boy Eddie started taking classical piano lessons influenced by his
father, Jan Van Halen, the family musician. The Van Halen family relocated
to California in 1968 where Eddie had a job as a paperboy. He bought a drum
set and his brother Alex got a guitar. But while Eddie was out on his paper
route, Alex began practicing on Eddie's drums and soon became better than
Eddie. So naturally, Eddie took Alex's guitar and well, you know how it went
after that...
Eddie was married to actress Valerie Bertinelli (Of One Day at a Time fame) on April 11, 1981. Together they now have one son, Wolfgang William Van Halen, born on March 16, 1991. (The inspiration for the song 316 - yes, even though you can hear early versions of it on tours before Wolfie's birth.)
